GridBox - A holistic Smart Grid approach

GridBox is a novel grid management approach which provides solutions to the new energy system requirements for handling the growing infeed of distributed electricity generators (PV, wind, CHP, biomass), the increased flexibility of active electricity consumption and the use of distributed storage. GridBox provides a strongly coordinated, distributed, low cost, small form factor solution for guaranteeing a secure operation of the distribution grid while at the same time allowing (local) market participation also for prosumers, ie. consumers with their own electricity generation and storage. GridBox enables new grid business models such as VPP, asset management, fault location, optimized grid dimensioning, power quality monitoring, smart market, building energy optimization, etc.

Main technology

At the core of the GridBox concept is a highly distributed network of real-time measurement devices. All nodes within this network communicate real-time grid status information in a hierarchical manner. The grid state is continuously measured and modelled, so that appropriate control of relevant parameters is possible. The GridBox platform aims at integration of any type of power generation, consumer, storage and intelligent building technology and offers a flexible framework for grid optimizing algorithms.

GridBox implements state-of-the-art IT concepts such as centralized monitoring and configuration, robustness features (principle of locality, fail-safe and recovery modes) and automatized deployment features. The communication protocol GridNet has been specifically designed to the needs of a highly distributed smart grid system.

Project milestones and timeline

September 2013: Project start, hardware/software development
July 2014: Pre-rollout, proof-of-concept of platform
March 2015: Development finished, algorithms simulated, Rollout of roughly 150 devices finished, begin of full system operation
March 2016: Technology verification finished

EEGI Label

The Gridbox project has been awarded with the EEGI Label. This label acknowledges that the Gridbox poject is in line with the spirit of the European Electricity Grid Initiative (EEGI). This label will allow that all the knowledge, results and success carried out by the Gridbox project will be actively disseminated by the GRID+. The European Electricity Grid Initiative (EEGI) is one of the European Industrial Initiatives under the Strategic Energy Technologies Plan (SET-PLAN) and proposes a 9-year European research, development and demonstration (RD&D) programme to accelerate innovation and the development of the electricity networks of the future in Europe.
